You want to maximize the number of matches you get on Tinder, so what could be better than always swiping right? You might want to slow your roll. As it turns out, there is a heavy cost to pay when you rely on this seemingly obvious strategy. Our friend Thijs will take it from here.
On This Episode Of Thijs' Tips...
We've talked about this topic on Zirby before, but I wanted to create a completely new post because of how significant this is.
I want all of you guys to truly understand Tinder, and get the most out of it. In order to do that you need to understand how some Tinder algorithms work. In effect, if you’re looking to get the “8s and 9s” on Tinder, you’ll have to drop the “swipe-all-filter-later” approach.
Using that approach, you’re lowering your internal tinder rating (Elo) and get offered later to the most attractive girls.
Life would be easier if you could jump on google and find out exactly what that algorithm is so you can adjust to it - but frankly, that's not going to happen. Tinder does not make its algorithms public, but we have some clues as to how it works..
How Tinder Works
Here's why: Think about what the Tinder’s business model is. (What is their key performance indicator?) It’s guys paying for Tinder Plus. But how do you get there? Keep the hot girls happy, keep them on the app.
So the best way for Tinder to make money is to keep hot girls active on the app. They need to keep that group of people happy, otherwise, no one else comes. This is the same mentality that clubs and bars follow.
How do they accomplish this? Remember, 95% of all swipes are matches for hot girls, so they will try to offer them the best guys first.
The best guys are the guys that:
- Get swiped the most by girls.
- Talk to all their matches (!!!).
- Receive responses back to their messages.
Now it's important to state that we don't know what the Tinder algorithm is, but we can make some "guesses" that lean on the side of obvious.
In any event, Tinder wants to match attractive women with guys who are the most desirable, have the highest level of activity, and message the girls they match with.
The Problem with Swiping All Right
By using the swipe-all-filter-later approach is you’re effectively pushing yourself further down the queue for a hot girl’s tinder.
It might take weeks, months if not years before she even comes across your profile if she only does a few swipes a day.
And... that's what most hot girls do anyway since everything is a match and they get engaging people to match with. They’re rarely starved for conversation.
It's important that you get on that girl's queue as soon as possible, and as high up on that queue as possible.
Here's how to recover...
At this point, maybe you've already dug yourself into a hole. You've spent the past few months only swiping right, and you're slow to respond to the matches you've got. How do you recover from this and reset your algorithm?
Easy: If you want to get hotter matches, you’ll have to delete your tinder, start it up again and change your approach. Yes, you’ll get fewer matches, but you’ll get higher-quality, more responsive matches.
Once you get those matches, the logical next step is converting them into phone numbers, and then dates.
And to make things easier, we have a free PDF breakdown of a Tinder conversation, where you can see line by line how we got her number, and the date.
Best of luck on your Tinder, guys! - Thijs
